Oktoberfest this year runs from 19th of September to 4th of October 2026 at Munich’s Theresienwiese fairgrounds. It’s the world’s biggest beer and cultural festival, attracting more than six million visitors every year.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Oktoberfest is a lively mix of Bavarian tradition, giant beer tents, parades, carnival rides, and live music. Expect big crowds, especially on opening weekend and during the Costume and Riflemen’s Parade on 20 September. Each tent has its own personality: some are loud and international, others more traditional and local.
HOW TO GET THERE
Fly into Munich International Airport (MUC). Take the S‑Bahn (S1 or S8) into the city. The festival grounds, Theresienwiese, are a short walk from Munich Hauptbahnhof. The U‑Bahn (U4/U5) also stops directly at Theresienwiese. Arrive early on weekends as tents fill quickly.
WHERE TO STAY
Accommodation prices rise significantly during Oktoberfest and book out months in advance.
Best areas to stay:
- Ludwigsvorstadt (closest to the festival)
- Altstadt‑Lehel (central and walkable)
- Maxvorstadt (lively and good value)
If booking late, consider Schwabing, Giesing, or airport hotels with train access.
BEER TENTS TO KNOW
- Hofbräu‑Festzelt: the most famous and international tent.
- Schottenhamel: where the mayor taps the first keg at noon on opening day.
- Augustiner‑Festhalle: a favourite among locals with traditional beer.
You must be seated at a table to be served beer.

Meals range from €12–€20.
